Governor Ron DeSantis Signs Landmark Legislation to Strengthen Parental Rights in Education

SPRING HILL, Fla. — Governor Ron DeSantis has signed House Bill (HB) 1557, known as the Parental Rights in Education Act, solidifying parents' ability to make crucial decisions regarding their children's upbringing. The legislation prohibits classroom instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity for students in kindergarten through 3rd grade and requires that any such instruction beyond these grades be age-appropriate. Additionally, it mandates school districts to inform parents of changes in services affecting a child's mental, emotional, or physical health. This new law builds upon last year's Parents’ Bill of Rights and aligns with the Governor’s commitment to emphasizing parental authority in education during his Year of the Parent initiative.

"Across the country, we’ve seen growing efforts to diminish parents’ rights, but here in Florida, we stand firm in defending the integral role parents play in their children’s education," said Governor Ron DeSantis. "Parents deserve to know about the services their child receives at school and be protected from classrooms pushing inappropriate topics on young kids."

Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez echoed this sentiment, stating, "This law ensures Florida parents remain empowered and that children are safeguarded. It prohibits discussions on gender orientation or sexual identity in K-3 classrooms and prevents school boards and teachers' unions from withholding important information from families. Governor DeSantis and I will not waver against the tactics of corporations and interest groups trying to erode parental involvement."

Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran emphasized the significance of collaboration between educators and parents. "Parents are the most vital influence in a child's life. This legislation ensures that Florida educators partner with parents to support student success. Governor DeSantis’ unwavering support for parental rights benefits all 2.9 million public school students in Florida."

Senate President Wilton Simpson reiterated that parents are key advocates for their children. "Children belong to families, not the government. This law strengthens parental rights, ensuring that critical decisions about a child's upbringing remain with families."

Speaker Chris Sprowls added, "The classroom is no place for lessons on gender identity or sexual orientation for 5- and 6-year-olds. These sensitive matters are for parents to address at the time they see fit. This bill stands for common sense and reflects the beliefs of the majority of Americans."

Representative Joe Harding, the bill's sponsor, highlighted the bill’s purpose: "This legislation protects children, empowers parents, and gives them the tools to fulfill their responsibilities."

Senator Dennis Baxley praised the Governor for his leadership, saying, "Governor DeSantis continues to prioritize Florida families, and this law is a testament to that commitment."

Parents like January Littlejohn from Leon County expressed gratitude for the legislation: "When schools exclude parents from significant decisions, it undermines our role and sends a harmful message to children. This law ensures parents are kept informed." Similarly, Erin Lovely of Palm Beach County stated, "This bill protects parents’ ability to guide their children’s upbringing and ensures that inappropriate topics are not introduced in early grades."
